Canvas GWX Is Located Just Outside Boundary of GasWorx,

Indicating Even More Investment in Ybor City

TAMPA, FL (September 14, 2023) – Crews will break ground Friday on the first project in what is expected to be a monumental wave of Ybor City redevelopment sparked by the 50-acre GasWorx district. Canvas GWX, a community of townhomes described as “industrial chic,” will be the first major construction project to begin just outside the GasWorx boundary.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will take part in Friday’s ceremony. The pioneering project shows that GasWorx is already serving as a catalyst for investment in Ybor, sparking more housing and businesses in neighboring areas, even though construction on GasWorx began just six months ago.

Canvas GWX’s townhouse units will be 2,100 to 2,400 square feet, with rooftop terraces and community green space. The industrial style architecture is influenced by the Ybor City warehouses and factories that have been converted into artist studios, lofts, and maker’s spaces. An existing commercial building on Nebraska Ave. is also being restored for future commercial use.

Sight Development is leading the project. Ellison Construction is serving as the contractor. Shepard Capital Partners is a joint venture partner with Sight Development, and Bank OZK is providing financing for the effort, which was designed by Curts Gaines Hall Jones Architects. Canvas GWX will be completed in two phases, with a total of 79 units and prices starting at $735,000. 18 units are under contract to date. The project is adjacent to the GasWorx district, which is currently under development by KETTLER and Darryl Shaw.
