Every chess player has that one hole.
The one that makes the heart sink when it appears on the board. One that you hope your opponents never play against you, especially in high stakes games. That’s your opening enemy.
As we flip the calendar to 2026, you are faced with a choice. Do you keep banging your head against the same wall, or eventually change the narrative?
January 1 is universal “new chapter” day, making it the perfect moment to make a strategic pivot. Whether you decide to avoid the opening foe entirely by turning to a new, unexplored repertoire, or you choose to face the beast head-on by finally mastering the theory to dismantle it, this is your reset button.
New Year, New Opening—that’s our motto as we help you turn your frustrations in 2025 into your strengths in 2026.
The Great Debate 1.e4 – what is the best response?
Throughout the month of December, we ran a series of polls on X/Twitter to find out which responses against 1.e4 are currently trending. We pit the most popular defenses against each other in tournament-style brackets.
The early rounds featured some classic collisions:
- The sandy one French Defense last longer than hypermodern Pirc/Modern.
- That Sicily brushed it off Scandinavian.
- The solid one Caro Kann close Owen’s defense,
- And a classic one 1…e5 defend his stance against provocative Alekhine’s Defense.
While the heavyweights dominated the initial bracket, the semifinals provided a major surprise.
Your author expects a “Clash of the Titans” final between Sicily and the traditional 1…e5. However, Caro-Kann had other plans, eliminating 1…e5 in a move that signaled the changing tastes of today’s society.
The grand final took place on December 25, 2025. It was a battle of styles where both contestants pinned their hopes on the c-pawn, but with very different advances.
In the end the Sicilian, the preferred weapon of most elite players, prevailed over the Caro-Kann. As Chessable power user Maurits van der Meer puts it: “Finally a proper fight! But, of course, making small, timid moves with the c-pawn is not as good as confidently grabbing space and not letting white take the center so easily 🤷”
